Quick Answer
To keep hand-painted ceramic dishes and trays looking their best, wash them gently by hand with mild soap, avoid harsh scrubbing, and store them so the painted surface isn't scratched.
Why Hand-Painted Ceramics Need Special Care
Unlike mass-produced ceramics, hand-painted pieces often have delicate surface designs that can wear off or fade with improper cleaning. The painted layer may be more vulnerable to abrasive scrubbing or harsh chemicals.
Even if a piece is labeled dishwasher-safe, the high heat and strong detergents can slowly dull the hand-painted finish. For most hand-painted ceramics, hand washing is the safer choice to preserve the artwork for years.
Know Your Ceramic's Finish
Some hand-painted ceramics have a protective glaze over the paint, while others are left unglazed or have a matte finish. Glazed pieces are generally more resistant to moisture and stains, but unglazed or matte finishes can absorb liquids and may require quicker drying.
If you're unsure about the finish, test a small, hidden area with a drop of water. If it beads up, it's likely glazed; if it absorbs, treat it more gently and avoid soaking.
5-Step Care Routine for Hand-Painted Ceramics
- Rinse with lukewarm water: Immediately after use, rinse the dish or tray with lukewarm water to remove food residue. Avoid extreme temperature changes, which can cause cracking. Never put a hot ceramic piece directly under cold water; let it cool first.
- Wash with mild dish soap and a soft sponge: Use a small amount of mild dish soap and a soft sponge or cloth. Gently wipe the surface in circular motions, focusing on soiled areas without scrubbing the painted design. Avoid abrasive pads, steel wool, or scouring powders—they can scratch the paint.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately: Rinse off all soap residue with clean water, then dry with a soft towel right away. Letting water air-dry can leave mineral spots or, on unglazed finishes, cause watermarks. For unglazed or matte pieces, dry extra carefully to prevent moisture absorption.
- Store with protection: When stacking, place a soft cloth or paper towel between pieces to prevent the painted surface from rubbing against another dish. Store in a cabinet where they won't be bumped. If you display them, keep them away from direct sunlight to avoid fading over time.
- Handle with care during use: Avoid cutting directly on the painted surface and don't drag utensils across it. For serving, use separate cutting boards or serving tools to protect the artwork. Reapply a food-safe ceramic sealant if the piece is unglazed and you plan to use it with food.
